Living in Spain and working in Gibraltar is quite a special way of life and although every weekend is like a mini holiday in the summer, us Gibraltar workers are also spoilt with some amazing locations within just a few hour’s drive too!
The team at Castle Hill here today have narrowed it down to tell you about 4 of our favourite weekend travel destinations….
Chris: Granada & Ski
Pack up your ski gear on the Friday after work and take the easy 3 hour drive to Granada. Stroll through the traditional streets of Granada stopping for a free tapas with every drink and making sure to stop for an exotic tea in an Arab tea room. Set off early for the 40 minute journey by car or bus to catch the first ski lifts in Sierra Nevada and enjoy some fabulous ski runs, pizza lunch, followed by a few more hours skiing if your legs can handle it, followed by some well deserved après ski. Stay in a hotel in the Sierra Nevada resort and head for the best steak in town at the traditional and atmospheric Restaurante Casa Chiquito. On the Sunday before heading home, squeeze in a few more runs then complain about your ski boots being too tight or pulled calf muscle before as an excuse to drink hot chocolate outside the sundrenched cafe with fabulous mountain views.
Richard: Scenic Train to Ronda
Take the train from San Roque-La Linea train station. There are around 6 services a day taking 2 hours and costing around €20 return. The journey winds up through the mountains past stations that look exactly the same as they did when they were built in the 1800’s. You also see vultures, eagles and nesting cranes on your way up as well as views for hundreds of miles. We recommend for restaurant Albacara with stunning dramatic views of the The Puente Nuevo. Spend the afternoon strolling through the traditional streets with optional visits to the museums, Arab baths and tapas bars before spending the night in the stunning Molino del Arco hotel.
Thomas: Golfing in Jerez
Just over an hour away from Gibraltar, Jerez is a great base for a weekend Golf trip. Lot’s of choice of good value accommodation along with great bars and restaurants make the City a great base. After a long days golfing take a late afternoon sherry wine & brandy tour at famous Tio Pepe Bodega. Within 20 minutes of the City Centre are 3 Golf Courses including Monte Castillo, Sherry Golf and Costa Bellena.
Danielle: Dining in Marbella
Only an hour from Gibraltar, some people do actually live in Marbella and do the daily commute so it doesn’t necessarily warrant an overnight stay. However, it only costs around €50 for a hotel in the old town in the winter and well worth it for a special evening out in Marbella. Enjoy the cobbled streets of the old town on the Saturday afternoon, before heading to the your reserved table at chef Dani Garcia’s second concept restaurant Bibo in Punta Romano. Enjoy a cocktail at the stunningly atmospheric open air bar with live music and a mix of all ages. Spend the Sunday strolling via the parks and traditional city to the promenade to enjoy lunch at one of the many frontline fish restaurants.
